About LCME Rock Guitar Exams

There are eight LCME Rock Guitar grades, plus two introductory levels.

The Graded exams consist of a performance, an improvisation and an aural assessment.

We also provide alternatives to our standard examination format designed to offer something different for our diverse range of candidates:

  • Recital Grade – an entirely performance-based live exam
  • Filmed Performance Award – a performance-based assessment by video submission*

*From 1st September 2024 Filmed Performance Award exams will be offered as Leisure Play recorded exams

LCME Rock Guitar syllabus

Changes to the 2019 syllabus

This syllabus replaces the Rock Guitar Syllabus (2011 until further notice), Rock Guitar Exam Information Booklet (2011 until further notice), and Rock Guitar Performance Awards Combined Syllabus and Information Booklet. These are now combined into one syllabus. Major changes to the syllabus are as follows:

  • The levels Initial and Preliminary have been renamed Step 1 and Step 2
  • Live Performance Awards have been renamed Recital Grades

Redesigned handbooks are available for all levels; the content is unchanged, and candidates with copies of the existing handbooks can still use these for the exams.
