Song selection
There has been some confusion about song selection for the new Musical Theatre for Singers syllabus, particularly regarding songs that appear in both the repertoire lists and handbooks. Let us clarify.
Songs are grouped into three levels in the syllabus:
-
Grades 1 to 3
-
Grades 4 and 5
-
Grades 6 to 8
Here's how song selection works.
Repertoire list songs:
-
A song from the Grades 1 to 3 list can be performed at ANY of those three grades
-
A song from the Grades 4 and 5 list can be performed at EITHER of those grades
-
A song from the Grades 6 to 8 list can be performed at ANY of those three grades
Musical Theatre Handbook songs:
-
This works exactly the same way – what matters is which level the song belongs to
-
For example, if "Johnny One Note" appears in the Grade 1 handbook, it can still be used for any exam at Grades 1, 2, or 3
-
The specific handbook grade is a suggestion, not a restriction
Important restrictions:
-
Songs must stay within their designated level. For example, a song listed for Grades 4 and 5 cannot be performed in a Grade 3 or Grade 6 exam
-
This applies even if using it as an own choice item
-
Previous syllabus gradings do not affect these restrictions
Own choice songs:
-
Any song not listed in the syllabus may be freely chosen as an own choice song
-
It must be of an equivalent standard to the listed repertoire for that grade
We hope this clarifies any confusion. Please refer to the syllabus for full requirements.
