Electric Guitar
About LCME Electric Guitar Exams
There are eight LCME Electric Guitar grades, plus one introductory level, four performance diplomas and three teaching diplomas.
The standard graded exams consist of scales and arpeggios, chords, rhythm playing, lead playing, spoken tests and aural assessment (there is also specialism for Grades 6 to 8).
We also provide alternatives to our standard examination format designed to offer something different for our diverse range of candidates:
- Recital Grade – an entirely performance-based live exam
- Filmed Performance Award – a performance-based assessment by video submission

Changes to the 2019 syllabus
This syllabus replaces the Electric and Bass Guitar Syllabus (2006 until further notice), Electric Guitar Exam Information Booklet (2013 until further notice) and Electric Guitar Performance Awards Combined
Syllabus and Information Booklet. These are now combined into one syllabus. Major changes to the syllabus are as follows:
- Additional topics have been added to the Spoken Tests component for all grades.
- The level Preliminary has been renamed Step.
- Live Performance Awards have been replaced by Recital Grades. The chord charts for the Lead Playing and Rhythm Playing components of Recital Grades are now shown to candidates in the exam, and not
prepared in advance.
There are redesigned handbooks available for all levels.
