LCME launches new Composition & Music Thesis Diplomas Syllabus

London College of Music Examinations (LCME) is proud to announce the release of our updated Composition and Music Thesis syllabus for 2025, designed to empower the next generation of composers and music researchers.

The refreshed syllabus, valid from 19 May 2025, introduces several forward-thinking enhancements while maintaining the academic standards that have been a hallmark of LCME qualifications since 1887.

Key changes for 2025

This extensive update introduces important changes to better align with contemporary music practices:

  • Visual media and live performance: Diploma level candidates can now submit original compositions for film, video, commercial advertisement, or other visual media, as well as music intended for live dance or drama performances

  • Programme notes requirement: At diploma level, candidates must submit 50-150 word programme notes for each portfolio item, explaining their composition process and creative approach

  • Refreshed assessment criteria: We’ve updated our assessment frameworks for both composition and thesis qualifications, and provided enhanced submission guidelines to make it easier than ever to understand requirements

"Our updated syllabus reflects LCME's commitment to preparing candidates for today's diverse music industry," says Ben Norbury, Head of Exams. "Whether composing for traditional ensembles or synchronising to visual media, candidates can now showcase their talents in ways that align with contemporary professional practice."

Timeline and overlap period

The 2016 syllabus will remain valid until 31 December 2025, allowing current candidates to complete their qualifications under the existing framework if preferred. This transition period gives teachers and students time to adapt to the new requirements.
