How Raul Vargas is revolutionising music education across Mexico
When Raul Agustin Castro Vargas discovered LCME five years ago, he found more than just an exam board – he found a partner that shared his vision for accessible, performance-focused music education. Now, as founder and CEO of Artistversity International Music & Audio School, he's building a network of campuses that's transforming how people across Mexico access music education.
"I am, above all, an educator," Raul explains. At 35, he brings over two decades of music experience to his role, having played drums at international festivals, taught at prestigious universities, and collaborated with major brands. But it's his passion for teaching that drives his ambitious expansion plans.
A focus on performance that resonates
What first drew Raul to LCME was simple: "The strong focus on performance, that's something I absolutely love, and so do my students." This emphasis has proven transformative for his students. "The LCME qualifications help enormously. Students gain essential resources like technique, sight-reading, interpretation, and musical vocabulary, all from a technical standpoint. These certifications also support their professional growth by giving them solid academic backing and, most importantly, recognition."
The results speak for themselves. "One student has been with me for five years, advancing from the early Grades to the Fellowship. Another student is completing her LLCM and preparing for the FLCM," Raul shares proudly. "I'm proud to say that both have grown tremendously, technically and professionally, and we are now working together as partners in my educational project, Artistversity."
Breaking down barriers to music education
Raul's mission addresses significant challenges in Mexico's music education landscape. "To put it plainly: there's a lack of government support, limited resources, and a shortage of public spaces for people to study and practice music. Many schools also impose age restrictions, which limits access. Finally, some students simply don't have a music school nearby."
His solution is ambitious yet practical. "That's why we're building Artistversity campuses in multiple cities across Mexico, so students can learn at their own pace, wherever they are. We plan to have at least 50 campuses by 2027, and so far, we are already approaching 20 campuses."
What makes Artistversity special for LCME candidates? "We welcome students of all levels and ages to study their instrument of choice. We guide them throughout their learning journey, and they define the pace and scope of that journey," Raul explains. The school offers training in a wide range of instruments and disciplines, with qualified teachers ready to share their knowledge.
Beyond Mexico: A vision for Latin America
Raul's vision extends far beyond Mexico's borders. "We are planning a large-scale expansion across Mexico, the United States, and Latin America, which opens the door for many more people to pursue music studies, whether professionally or just for the joy of playing."
The school has secured support from companies in the music industry, offering students free training, masterclasses, mentorship, and workshops. "These are invaluable tools for students aiming for a professional path, or simply wanting to jam with friends."
The LCME difference and an invitation to dream big
For Raul, what sets LCME apart goes beyond methodology and materials. "What I value even more is the people behind LCME, the leadership and support teams make everything smoother. It's truly exceptional to partner with institutions led by such great human beings."
Raul closes with an invitation to the wider LCME community: "Now, my wife and I have poured all of that experience into Artistversity, which is in full expansion. We are building a worldwide network of campuses, and anyone interested in being part of our movement, whether as a student or a collaborator, is welcome to reach out to me personally or via our institutional email. No matter where you are in the world, you can be part of this growing community."
He leaves us with inspiring words from Vishen Lakhiani: "Sometimes you have to let go of a life that's just 'good' to make room for something truly great."
"So dream big," Raul adds. "It's never too late to keep learning and sharing music with the people around you."
