From Wales to New Zealand: Adrian Hughes champions music education

LCME Representative Adrian Hughes shares his musical journey and vision for growing performance education in New Zealand

Adrian Hughes's musical story began with a simple moment of inspiration in Wales. "I first picked up the guitar when I was 8 years old, inspired by my teacher who introduced us to everything from classical to rock," he recalls. "This early encouragement sparked a passion that grew into a lifelong journey of exploring different genres and instruments."

Today, Adrian serves as LCME's Representative in New Zealand, where he champions high-quality music education across the country. His path from that first guitar lesson to supporting students and teachers throughout New Zealand showcases the transformative power of music education and community support.

Building confidence through performance

Adrian's early experiences performing at the Eisteddfod yr Urdd competitions gave him valuable stage experience and helped build his confidence as a musician. This foundation led to significant achievements, including being a finalist in the prestigious Admira International Classical Guitar Competition in Bath.

His LCME journey began in the early 1990s with RGT and progressed through the grades until 2003, when he completed four Grade 8 exams under the guidance of his teacher, Dave Crawford, who introduced him to a wide range of musical styles and genres. "These achievements earned me UCAS points that enabled me to study Jazz at Middlesex University," he notes, highlighting how LCME qualifications opened doors to higher education.

From student to educator

Adrian’s exposure to a wide range of genres and music styles had helped him not only grow as a performer, but it also benefited him greatly in the next stage of his journey, because after graduating from university, Adrian discovered his passion for teaching. "I decided to pursue music education full-time and have found it incredibly rewarding to help students grow in confidence, develop their skills, and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach. My experience and background helped me as a teacher because it meant I was familiar and comfortable with many styles of music."

He taught in Cardiff for four years, guiding students through LCME exams, before making a significant life change. "In 2012, I moved to New Zealand after meeting my now wife while travelling. Since then, I have continued teaching and supporting students on their musical journeys. We now live in Christchurch, on the South Island, with our two children."

Embracing new opportunities

Three years ago, Adrian took on the role of LCME Representative for New Zealand. "When the previous representative retired, he encouraged me to take on the role," Adrian shares. "I felt it was an exciting opportunity to promote high-quality, inclusive music education and support teachers and students throughout New Zealand."

The role comes with unique challenges and opportunities. "New Zealand has a thriving and diverse music community, rich with talent and creativity," Adrian observes. "While connecting students and teachers across different regions can be challenging, it encourages the growth of strong, close-knit networks."

Adrian sees tremendous potential for music education in New Zealand. "There is a growing appreciation for diverse musical styles and pathways, with more young people exploring music not just as a hobby but as a career," he explains. "I see LCME playing a significant role in this growth by providing accessible, globally recognised qualifications and inspiring students to aim high while enjoying the process of learning."

Continuing to grow and pursue other passions

Adrian believes in practising what he teaches. Last year, he completed three diplomas, achieving a DipLCM (TD), ALCM in Performance (Electric Guitar), and an LLCM in Performance (Acoustic Guitar). "This was to show my students that it's always good for you to keep on pushing yourself and working towards a goal, and keep focused. This is what the grades do really well. I want to complete my FLCM next year and then look at completing my Teaching diplomas in the next few years."

When not working with music education, Adrian pursues his other passion. "I am a keen mountain biker, although I’ve broken a few bones along the way, and I love spending time outdoors, whether it's exploring trails or adventuring with family and friends."

The power of connection

Adrian's message to the LCME community reflects his deep belief in music's transformative power. "Music has the power to connect people across cultures and generations," he says. "I'm proud to be part of a community that nurtures this connection and helps students achieve their potential. I look forward to continuing to support and grow the LCME presence in New Zealand."

Through his work as LCME Representative, Adrian continues to embody our mission of empowering people through performance, ensuring that students across New Zealand have access to high-quality music education and the opportunities it creates.
