About LCME Composition exams

LCME's Composition qualifications provide a structured pathway for composers at every level to develop their craft, express their musical ideas and receive expert assessment of their work.

From creating your first instrumental piece at Grade 2 to developing a substantial portfolio for FLCM level, our exams empower you to explore diverse styles and instrumentation while building a professional portfolio of compositions.

Qualification structure

There are four LCME Composition grades (2, 4, 6 and 8) and three diploma levels (ALCM, LLCM and FLCM).

All exams require candidates to submit a portfolio of compositions created to specific requirements for their level. Portfolios showcase a range of compositional skills, from solo instrumental works to more complex arrangements.

What's new for 2025

Our refreshed syllabus introduces exciting enhancements:

  • Visual media compositions: Diploma candidates can now submit original compositions for film, video, commercial advertisement, or other visual media

  • Live performance works: Music created for dance or drama performances is now acceptable at diploma levels

  • Programme notes: Diploma candidates must include 50-150 word programme notes for each portfolio item
