Music Theatre
There are eight LCM Music Theatre grades, plus two introductory levels, four performance diplomas and three teaching diplomas.
The standard graded exams consist of a performance of two to four pieces and a discussion. At Grade 8 candidates will also have to read at sight one part of a dialogue from a libretto.
We also provide alternatives to our standard examination format designed to offer something different to our diverse range of candidates:
- Performance Award – a performance-based assessment by video submission
Syllabus
First exams for the 2019–2021 syllabus will be in the Spring session of 2019. There will be a two-session overlap – the old syllabus will be accepted for exams up to and including the Summer session of 2019.
The new syllabus includes a set of handbooks, which will be available from the end of November.
Resources
Music Theatre Handbooks
The songs in the handbooks have been specially selected and arranged for our examinations. The songs are accompanied by performance notes, providing a valuable resource which will encourage and inspire a love of the musical and literary aspects of the genre. The books also include guidance on the discussion (and sight reading at Grade 8). It is not compulsory to perform a song from the handbook in the exam.
